The Adams 12 School district has accumulated 16 million in budget cuts in the last three years and are expecting an additional 15-18 million in cuts in 2010-2011.
This amount of fund reduction will affect the district at every level. The district reported that past budget cuts came from eliminating central staff office positions, the cutting of central office budgets, the removal of bus routes, cutting elementary school technology coordinators and cutting teaching positions.
All of these methods of budget cuts will no doubt affect not only staff members, but students as well. Many Horizon teachers are at risk of losing there jobs in the next year because of the cuts. Particularly the teachers who have been working the longest due to their higher pay checks.
Regardless of which teachers may be cut the fact is that there will be cuts here at horizon. These cuts will have a direct influence on students and their learning.
“Classes are already huge. If more teachers are forced out the classes will just get bigger,” senior Chris Nelson said.
“These cuts are going to cause less one-on-one time between teachers and students,” senior Jon Dinh said. “This is one of the things that helps me most, and students next year will have less access to it.”
In all likelihood as more information comes to light on the budget cuts the district will be kind enough to reveal it provide more clarity to this difficult situation.
